Many parents skip booster seats for carpools

You set out with a crew from the birthday party, but find you?re a booster short. Do you make sure your own child gets one? Or do you let all the kids use belts only? A new survey found half the parents of 4- to 8-year-olds questioned sometimes let passengers go booster free.

All Yoga iPhone app strikes the right pose (Appolicious)

All Yoga strikes a careful balance, giving beginners needed structure in order to understand the basics, while providing room to experiment for those who are comfortable with advanced poses.

That depth manifests itself in a few different ways. The most obvious is that while All Yoga showcases individual poses, listing step-by-step photos alongside written instructions for how to perform each pose, the meat of the app is in its programs.

Users can select from pre-set sequences, like the sun salutation, strengthening practice or stress management practice, and they?ll be treated to a carefully selected list of poses. This is particularly great for beginners who might not be sure what order to do their yoga poses in to get the most benefit from them.

Those with more familiarity with yoga poses can certainly use those programmed sequences, but should also find the ?Routines? tab on the app a welcome site. In ?Routines,? users can create their own practice sequences and save them for later use. It?s a great way for people to apply the knowledge they?ve gained through the structured practices on their own.

If you don?t have the money to spend taking an actual yoga class, All Yoga seems like a great alternative. It could use some voice narration for the poses, as some of them make it a bit difficult to look at your iPhone as you tie yourself in knots, but other than that, this is a superbly put-together app with appeal for all audiences.

Sudan-held Vitol oil tankers freed: industry source (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Two oil tankers carrying South Sudanese crude that were held by Sudan earlier this month chartered by oil trading giant Vitol were freed late on Sunday, an industry source told Reuters.

"The two tankers were freed last on Sunday and they are carrying a total of 1.6 million barrels," said the industry source familiar with the matter.

South Sudan shut down oil production over the weekend in protest over north Sudan seizing shipments in a dispute over how much landlocked South Sudan should pay to pump oil to Port Sudan in the north.

Vitol, one of the world's largest oil trading houses with average sales of over 2.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2010, is expanding its exploration and production interests in West Africa and Asia.

Oil is the lifeline of both countries' economies but the south's secession left Khartoum controlling just 125,000 bpd of production compared to South Sudan's 350,000 bpd.

Oil provides about 98 percent of South Sudan's income and is vital for developing an already poor country devastated by years of civil war.

Carter Center gets $40M to eradicate Guinea worm (AP)

ATLANTA ? The Carter Center on Monday announced it received $40 million in donations to help fuel its mission to eradicate Guinea worm disease, a debilitating parasite that once plagued millions of people across the developing world.

The Atlanta-based center said the funding comes from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Children's Investment Fund Foundation and President Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates. It said the grants, along with $31 million committed last year by the United Kingdom, will help eradicate the disease by 2015.

"Millions of people in Africa and Asia will no longer risk suffering one of the most horrific human diseases ever known thanks to the generosity and global health leadership" of the donors, said former President Jimmy Carter.

There were about 3.5 million reported cases of the disease in 20 nations when the Carter Center's eradication program began in 1986. On Monday, the center said an early tally showed that only 1,060 cases of the disease occurred worldwide in 2011.

Most of the cases occurred in the African nations of South Sudan, Mali and Ethiopia. There was also an isolated outbreak in Chad.

Guinea worm disease occurs when people drink water contaminated with worm larvae. Over a year, the worm can grow to the size of a 3-foot long spaghetti noodle. Then they very slowly emerge through the skin, often causing searing, debilitating pain for months. The disease, however, is usually not fatal.

There is no vaccine or medicine for the parasite. Infection is prevented by filtering water and educating people how to avoid the disease.

The Carter Center has worked to stem the spread of Guinea worm in part by handing out millions of pipe filters and educating residents about the dangers of drinking tainted water. The former president has also has used his political bully pulpit to encourage local politicians to devote time and resources to fighting the disease.

The center said it would use the funding to pay for programs aimed at stamping out the disease and to fund surveillance by the World Health Organization to certify eradication over three years.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation contributed $23.3 million of Monday's pledge. Nahyan pledged $10 million and the Children's Investment Fund Foundation gave an additional $6.7 million.

"The last cases of any disease are the most challenging to wipe out," said Carter. "But we know that with the international community's support, Guinea worm disease soon will be relegated to the history books."

HBT: Rangers will meet with Oswalt on Monday

Gerry Fraley of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers are going to meet with Roy Oswalt on Monday. There?s no offer on the table, but there is a meeting.

This, combined with the multiple denials from the Cardinals that they were, as previously reported, close to a deal with Oswalt, could suggest that Texas is making a move. ?But then again, the Rangers met with Prince Fielder too, and see how that turned out.

So, my guess: Oswalt signs a $200 million deal with Detroit. Because that?s how this works, right?

Man pleads not guilty in NJ synagogue firebombings (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A 19-year-old man accused of attempted murder in the firebombing of two New Jersey synagogues including one that housed a rabbi who was burned when fire ignited a blanket on his bed pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.

Anthony Graziano was arrested after the Bergen County prosecutor released a store surveillance video which it said showed him buying supplies used to make the Molotov cocktails used in the January 11 attack on the Congregation Beth El in Rutherford, New Jersey.

Prosecutors investigating the arsons as hate crimes have charged Graziano with nine counts of attempted murder in the first degree, along with charges of bias intimidation and aggravated arson in connection with the pair of attacks.

In the Rutherford case, petrol bombs thrown at a building that serves as both a synagogue and a rabbi's family home ignited a blanket on the rabbi's bed and he awoke to the flames, his wife told reporters at the time.

The rabbi, Nosson Schuman, put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher and suffered minor burns, police said. The house was minimally damaged. The rabbi, his wife, their five children, ages 5 to 17, and the rabbi's elderly parents evacuated the home, police said.

The charges against Graziano, who was in custody with bail set at $5 million, also included a separate firebomb attack on the Temple K'Hal Adath Jeshrun in Paramus, New Jersey, earlier in January, prosecutors said.

Police said they also retrieved evidence from Graziano's home in Lodi, New Jersey. The public defender representing Graziano could not be reached for comment.

Two instances of anti-Semitic graffiti being daubed on the walls of two other New Jersey synagogues in December were no longer thought to be connected to the arson attacks, investigators said.

Google Maps, Listen and Goggles get updates

Google apps updates

Google Maps, Google Listen and Google Goggles have each received updates today in the Android Market. Here's what's new:

Google Maps Navigation now has a cool feature that will switch the app to "night mode" when you're going through a tunnel. Not sure how much navigating you'll need to do while you're actually in the tunnel, but it looks cool.

Google Listen is getting its second update this month! So much for being shipped off to the land of forgotten apps. New today is a bug fix that "fixes an issue in which Listen while in the background would improperly take audio focus from other apps."

And finally, there's Google Goggles, which is getting a few bugfixes in version 1.7.1. Fixed are the following:

  • Don't store inaccurate locations for queries in search history
  • Show the description field for user-submitted results
  • Don't crash when loading large bitmaps
  • Performance enhancements in continuous mode

Worthy updates, all. Head on into the Android Market or use the links below to get your updates.

Verizon posts $2B 4Q loss on pension adjustment (AP)

NEW YORK ? Verizon paid dearly to put iPhones in the hands of subscribers in the latest quarter, holding back its profits in the hope that its customers will rack up higher monthly bills and stay loyal.

The quarter saw the launch of the iPhone 4S, the second model to be sold by Verizon, and it was clear that many had been waiting for it. Verizon on Tuesday said it sold 4.3 million of them, and 7.7 million smartphones total.

But by the upside-down logic of the wireless industry, higher sales mean lower profits for the quarter. Verizon Wireless subsidizes each smartphone by hundreds of dollars, figuring that it will make the money back in service fees over a two-year contract. That means the wireless division, though still highly profitable, posted a rare drop in operating income for the fourth quarter.

An iPhone that Verizon buys from Apple for around $600 is sold in stores for $200. The question is whether phone companies ever really make that money back.

Sanford Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett argues that the example of AT&T, which has sold iPhones since 2007, indicates that the expected boost to profits never really materializes, because the phone companies have to keep subsidizing each new iPhone release.

"The earnings pop will always be a year away," Moffett wrote Tuesday.

In the results of Verizon Communications Inc., the phone company that owns 55 percent of Verizon Wireless, the effect of the iPhone sales was masked by large charge for adjusting the value of its pension plans.

The New York-based company reported that it lost $2.02 billion, or 71 cents per share, in the last three months of 2011. That compares with net income of $2.64 billion, or 93 cents per share, a year ago.

Verizon had warned that the big pension charge was coming.

Excluding the pension effect and another one-time item, Verizon earned 52 cents per share. That was a penny shy of the average forecast of analysts polled by FactSet. Comparable earnings last year were 54 cents per share.

Verizon had warned that hefty smartphone sales would hold back earnings, but analysts had expected a slightly smaller drop. Verizon shares fell 90 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $37.50 in morning trading. On Jan. 3, they hit a four-year high of $40.48.

Revenue rose 7.7 percent to $28.4 billion from $26.4 billion a year ago. The latest figure was in line with analysts' expectations.

Wireless accounted for all of the revenue increase, as Verizon's wireline division saw a small decrease. The "old" phone company essentially breaks even, despite the popularity of its cable-like FiOS TV and Internet service.

Usually, Verizon's overall revenue increase is driven higher monthly wireless service revenues, as it gains customers. But this quarter, the largest contributor to the rise in revenue was phone sales, which doubled from last year to $2.2 billion.

Verizon Wireless added 1.2 million new subscribers on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. It was the second-best result in the last two years, further solidifying the company's position as the industry leader, with 87.4 million phones and other devices on contract-based plans, and 108.7 million total.

Vodafone Group PLC of Britain owns the remaining 45 percent of Verizon Wireless, and lays claim to a corresponding share of the profits.

FedEx opens real-time tracking to aerospace, finance, arts industries ...

FedEx first announced its SenseAware service ? which provides corporate customers with near real-time tracking for shipments ? in 2009 for the healthcare and life science industries.

Now the company is opening the service to all comers, including the aerospace, finance and arts industries.

The point of the service is that it gives companies more visibility and monitoring capability into shipments. At the heart of the product is a multi-sensor device that travels with the package, sending data to the cloud, from which a company representative can monitor it using a web-based application.

The device itself is pretty neat, and goes far beyond simple GPS coordinates (although if you ever ?received? a package that never materialized, this in and of itself is a godsend): it takes readings for temperature, relative humidity and barometric pressure, can tell if and when the shipment was opened and, for film buffs out there, if the contents have been exposed to light.

Since the customers in question tend to ship highly sensitive or large packages (think pallets, not pouches), the device can also handle major shipments. And it doesn?t require a major infrastructure overhaul: drop in the device, and let the sensors do the rest.

It?s the future of shipping, really. Because with all of the connected technology at work around us, why should we resort to being left in the dark for shipments ? medicine, prototypes, encrypted hard drives ? that are critical?

7 charged in $78M record-setting inside trade case (AP)

NEW YORK ? Greed on Wall Street set a record, authorities said Wednesday as they unveiled a nearly $78 million insider trading case that involved at least seven financial industry professionals and included a hedge fund co-founder who triggered a single trade that earned $53 million in profits, the largest lone transaction ever prosecuted in Manhattan.

"Today's charges illustrate something that should disturb all of us: They show that insider trading activity in recent times has, indeed, been rampant and routine, and that this criminal behavior was known, encouraged and exploited by authority figures in several investment funds," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told a news conference.

He said nearly $62 million was earned through tips provided by a Dell Inc. employee to a former Dell worker who spread the information among his friends at at least five investment houses, including three hedge funds. He called it "a stunning portrait of organized corruption on a broad scale" and said it raised to 63 the number of people arrested in a government crackdown on insider trading. So far, there have been 56 convictions.

"Each wave of charges and arrests seems to produce leads to lead us to the next phase," said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk.

She said the arrests were not the last in a 4-year-old probe dubbed "Operation Perfect Hedge."

"If you are engaged in insider trading, what distinguishes you from the dozens who have been charged is not that you haven't been caught; it's that you haven't been caught yet," she said.

Bharara called the seven men arrested in the latest crackdown part of "a criminal club whose purpose was profit and whose members regularly bartered lucrative inside information.

"It was a club where everyone scratched everyone else's back," he said. "The criminal complaint and three felony informations unsealed today paint a stunning portrait of organized corruption on a broad scale."

The criminal complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan charged four of the men with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud, among other charges. Three analysts charged in the other documents have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with the government.

The insider trading plot was noteworthy for its size. Last month, hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam began serving an 11-year prison term ? the longest ever given in an insider trading case ? for a scheme that prosecutors said produced as much as $75 million in profits on dozens of trades over a multi-year period. That prosecution resulted in more than two dozen convictions and led to a spinoff probe that produced even more arrests.

Bharara said the case he announced Wednesday was comparable to the one brought against Rajaratnam. He highlighted its size, saying the co-conspirators netted more than $61.8 million in illegal profits based on trades of a single stock from 2008 through 2009. The Securities and Exchange Commission said the profits, combined with $15.7 million earned on trades involving Nvidia Corp., reached nearly $78 million.

SEC Enforcement Director Robert Khuzami said it was disturbing that the case involved high level executives at "some of the largest and most sophisticated hedge funds in the country."

He said there was nothing wrong with fast-trading hedge funds but they are already characterized by a lack of transparency and can pose a "grave threat to the integrity of the markets and the level playing field that is the foundation of those markets" when they use their considerable market power to influence those who possess inside information.

The SEC said the case involved closely associated hedge fund traders at Stamford, Conn.-based Diamondback Capital Management LLC and Greenwich, Conn.-based Level Global Investors LP.

Anthony Chiasson, a co-founder at former hedge fund group Level Global Investors, was among four men arrested Wednesday. He surrendered to the FBI in New York, where he lives.

In court papers, he was credited with a starring role in the securities fraud. Authorities said a hedge fund analyst fed Chiasson inside information about an upcoming announcement of Dell's earnings for the first and second quarters of 2008, allowing Chiasson and others at his hedge fund to make approximately $57 million in illegal profits through trades. Inside information about Dell earnings resulted in $3.8 million in illegal profits at another hedge fund and $1 million in illegal profits at a third hedge fund, the complaint said. The Dell inside information also allowed an investment firm to avoid losses of approximately $78,000, authorities said.

Bail for Chiasson was set at $2.5 million after Assistant U.S. Attorney David S. Leibowitz told a magistrate judge at Chiasson's initial court appearance in Manhattan that the allegations against him were "staggering" and, if successfully proven, could result in a prison sentence of at least 10 years. He said the $53 million Chiasson earned for his hedge fund by shorting Dell stock on early word that its earnings would disappoint was the largest single illegal trade ever cited in a criminal case in federal court in Manhattan.

Leibowitz said it took Rajaratnam six years and dozens of trades to accumulate the $70 million in profits alleged by the government in his case. The prosecutor requested a $5 million bail, saying Chiasson was worth at least $40 million and had earned as much as $11 million in a single year at his hedge fund.

Chiasson's lawyer, Gregory Morvillo, said his client knew the government was after him when agents raided his office 14 months ago and looked forward to defending himself.

"He didn't do anything wrong and he wants an opportunity to clear his name," Morvillo said.

Jon Horvath, an analyst at Sigma Capital Management, an affiliate of hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors in Manhattan, was arrested at his New York City home while Todd Newman, a hedge fund portfolio manager, was arrested in Needham, Mass. Analyst Danny Kuo of San Marino, Calif. also was arrested.

Among those who have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and securities fraud and are cooperating in the case was Sandeep Goyal, of Princeton, N.J., who worked from the summer of 2006 through May 2007 for Dell at its corporate headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, and obtained inside information from employees of Dell after he began working as an associate analyst for a global asset management firm in Manhattan, court papers said.

According to court papers, Goyal benefited from his relationship with a co-conspirator who worked in Dell's investor relations department from March 2007 through March 2009 and in its corporate development office from March 2009 through April 2010. Authorities said a hedge fund with $4 billion in assets in 2009 paid Goyal about $175,000 for providing insider information about Dell.

Another cooperator was identified as Jesse Tortora, of Pembroke Pines, Fla. The SEC said Goyal tipped Tortora who then tipped several others, leading to insider trades on behalf of the Diamondback and Level Global hedge funds.

The third cooperator was identified as Spyridon (Sam) Adondakis, a Level Global analyst. The SEC said he tipped Chiasson, his manager. Adondakis also lived in New York City.

"These are not low-level employees succumbing to temptation by seizing a chance opportunity," Khuzami said. "These are sophisticated players who built a corrupt network to systematically and methodically obtain and exploit illegal inside information again and again at the expense of law-abiding investors and the integrity of the markets."

FBI Agent David Makol said in court papers that the government built its case through information provided by the three cooperators, consensually recorded conversations, court-authorized wiretaps, telephone records, trading records, electronic communications, documents provided by a cooperator and other documents obtained from two hedge funds. The hedge funds were not identified in court papers.

Messages seeking comment left with lawyers for the other defendants were not immediately returned.

Why Teens Are More Prone to Addiction, Mental Illness (LiveScience.com)

By comparing the brain's response to a food reward in adult and teen rats, researchers have pinpointed some differences that might explain why adolescents take more risks and are more prone to addiction, depression and schizophrenia.

"The brain region that is very critical in planning your actions and in habit formation is directly tapped by reward in adolescents, which means the reward could have a stronger influence in their decision-making, in what they do next, as well as forming habits in adolescents," study researcher Bita Moghaddam, of the University of Pittsburgh, told LiveScience. "Teenagers could do stupid things in response to a situation not because they are stupid, but because their brains are working differently. Somehow they perceive and react to a situation differently."

The study was performed in rats, but teenagers throughout the animal kingdom show the same risk-taking and impulsive behaviors as human teens, so the results are likely to be applicable in humans too, the researchers said. Other studies show that the teen brain is also more susceptible to stress than the adult brain. Teenage brains are especially susceptible to addiction and mental illness, and the differences in the brain at that time may play a big role in these diseases.

"If your brain is processing the exact same thing differently, that could give us clues as to why their brain is more vulnerable," Moghaddam said. "By understanding what is happening in the brains of adolescents we can better understand how to prevent disease."

Teenage brain

The researchers first taught the rats a basic trick: When presented with a tone, the rats learn that if they stuck their noses in a hole, they would get a food pellet. The researchers placed probes in each rat's brain to monitor the neurons in two brain regions ? the nucleus accumbens and the dorsal striatum ? while they performed this task.

The nucleus accumbens is the part of the brain that reacts with happy "reward" chemicals when we eat, have sex or do other things that ensure our survival. Drugs activate this region as well, creating an artificial reward signal by making these neurons send out their feel-good chemicals.

The researchers saw very similar reward responses in the nucleus accumbens when the rats received food pellets; the big difference between the brains of teenage and adult rats occurred in the dorsal striatum, where more activity showed up for teen rats about to get a food pellet. This brain region gets activated by the reward signals from the nucleus accumbens and is involved in habit formation, sort of sealing in the memory of "I put my nose in here and I get a treat that makes me feel good."

Disease state

These brain differences could manifest as the impulsive and risk-taking habits of your average teen.

"It could make the adolescent brain more vulnerable to what goes on around them in the environment, to things that are expected to be rewarding, and could make the brain more vulnerable to addiction," Moghaddam said. "Events or things in the environment could influence your next action more strongly in adolescents than in adults."

The researchers don't know how the brain changes from a teenage-like state to an adult state, but problems during this transition could lead to disease, the researchers said.

"Most of us turn into perfectly normal adults, but in some individuals this transition may not happen normally, it may under-correct or over-correct, and that's when disease could happen," Moghaddam said.

Leah Somerville, a researcher from Weill Cornell Medical College, who wasn't involved in the study, said it "offers an important advance to the understanding of how the [dorsal] striatum differentially represents motivated behavior in adolescents and adults. Ultimately, this work holds the potential to inform the mechanisms of adolescent risk-taking."

The study was published today (Jan. 16) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academies of Sciences.

Head found by hikers' dogs in Hollywood Hills

Two women walking dogs in the Hollywood Hills found a human head in a plastic bag, Los Angeles police said.

The women made the discovery on a popular trail below the Hollywood sign Tuesday afternoon, police said.

"Two of the dogs began to play with the bag and what appeared to be an object. While the dogs were playing with it, at some point the object came out of the bag and they discovered that it was a head ? a severed head," Sgt. Mitzi Fierro told KCAL-TV.

The bag was visible from the trail, she said.

The Los Angeles Times cited sources as saying it appeared to be from a man in his 40s with "salt-and-pepper" hair.

TMZ reported that one of the dog walkers who found the head asked a passer-by if she could use his phone to call the police. After he obliged, the man took a photo of the head. The picture is now up for sale. According to TMZ, it depicts a male's bloody head, with very red and slightly decomposed skin.

Not there long
Police believe the severed head had not been at the site for a long time, based in part on the fact that there were no animal bites on it.

"There's not a lot of signs of decomposition yet," Fierro said.

The women who discovered the bag work as dog walkers and had about nine dogs with them at the time, Officer Karen Rayner said.

Investigators hope to come up with a sketch of the victim in order to identify who he is, Fierro said. Coroner's investigators also will attempt to identify the victim through dental records.

Police used cadaver dogs to assist in the search for further human remains until dusk, when they called off the investigation until daylight returns.

The crime scene was being guarded by police. NBC Los Angeles reported that detectives returned to the site Wednesday morning. The investigation is being handled by LAPD?s Robbery-Homicide Division.

The stretch of road where the head was found is a hiking trail popular with local residents, especially dog walkers.

The trail also passes by the "Batcave," which was used in the original Batman and Robin series.

Wall Street set to open higher on China data (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks were set to open higher on Tuesday as Chinese data fueled the belief the government may move to stimulate growth, overshadowing recent credit downgrades in Europe and a mixed bag of bank earnings.

China's economy grew slightly more than expected but at the weakest pace in 2-1/2 years, suggesting the government may try to boost growth in the near term by tweaking monetary policy.

"Expectations are always a little irrational when it comes to China because of the track record we've seen. It's definitely supportive (for the market) and the fact of the matter is they are still the engine of growth," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Citigroup was off 3.3 percent to $29.72 in premarket trade after its quarterly earnings missed expectations, while Wells Fargo advanced 1.3 percent to $29.99 after its profit topped estimates by a penny.

Investors appeared set to shrug off a cut in the credit rating of the euro zone's rescue fund by Standard & Poor's by one notch, apparently relieved the downgrade was not more severe. The move comes after Friday's widely expected downgrade of a number of euro zone countries.

"It was just a question of when it was going to happen so it wasn't a surprise, it wasn't unexpected and that would explain why it was not disruptive," said Kenny.

S&P 500 futures rose 8.9 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures climbed 79 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 18 points.

A gauge of manufacturing in New York State showed growth picked up in January, rising to the highest level in nine months, keeping in line with the trend of modest improvement in U.S. economic data.

Carnival Corp (CCL.N) slumped 15.9 percent to $28.82 in premarket trade after its Italian unit, Costa Crociere, attempted to locate missing passengers after its cruise liner capsized. Fellow cruise operator Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCL.N) lost 7.3 percent to $26.60.

France's EDF SA (EDF.PA) agreed to drop its opposition to power group Exelon Corp's (EXC.N) purchase of Constellation Energy Group Inc (CEG.N) after reaching a deal to protect the operating independence of a nuclear joint venture with Constellation. Exelon rose 1.4 percent to $40.30 in premarket.

AIA Group Ltd (1299.HK), Asia's No. 3 insurer that is about one-third owned by American International Group Inc (AIG.N), may bid for the $6 billion Asian insurance operations of ING Groep (ING.AS), sources said.

Win $5000 business grants | business, small, firms - The Orange ...

Office equipment maker Brother International Corp. has launched a $25,000 program to provide five small businesses with $5,000 grants each to help those firms grow and succeed.

The grants will be awarded to the five most creative and original business plans, according to StartupNation, a website for entrepreneurs.

"Despite economic barriers to obtain start-up capital, small-business owners remain resolute and enthusiastic in their pursuit (of) doing more with less and living out their dream," said Brother Vice President John Wandishin. "This grant program signifies an opportunity to help entrepreneurs rise above financial challenges and demonstrates the commitment Brother has to better understanding and addressing the concerns of American's small-business owners."

The size of the grant was determined by an online survey that found that 61% of small-business owners started their firms with less than $5,000 in capital.

Deadline is Marc 2. Winners will be announced March 26 on www.startupnation.com.

France can overcome crisis with reforms: Sarkozy (Reuters)

AMBOISE, France (Reuters) ? President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Sunday France could overcome its debt crisis as long as it was prepared to pull together to adopt economic reforms, two days after the country lost its prized triple-A credit rating.

Sarkozy said he would announce reforms at the end of the month and that he intends to implement them rapidly following talks with union leaders and employers this coming week.

"I will tell them (the French people) the important decisions that we need to take without losing any time," he said in a speech to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Michel Debre, father of the constitution of France's Fifth Republic.

"The crisis can be overcome provided we have the collective will and the strength to reform our country."

Three months away from a presidential election, Sarkozy has turned his focus to growth, vowing to overhaul welfare financing, company labor charges and job flexibility, with plans for a so-called "Social VAT" to fund welfare and a tax on financial transactions.

The president is due to meet union leaders and employers for talks on Wednesday.

Sarkozy did not directly address the decision by Standard & Poor's to cut France's top-notch rating during the speech, despite criticism this weekend from opposition Socialist politicians who said it was his policies that had been downgraded, not France.

Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered across the nation (Reuters)

CHICAGO/NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Americans honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday with a traditional day of service as well as a new wave of economic injustice protests by Occupy Wall Street.

On the first King holiday since the now-global Occupy movement launched in New York City in September, the reignited debate over inequality drew hundreds of protestors to march in wintry temperatures in Manhattan, stopping at a Bank of America branch to shout, "The banks got bailed out, we got sold out."

At least two protesters were loaded into a police van at the march, held "because Dr. King dedicated the last months of his life to planning a campaign for the right of all to a decent-paying job," leaders said in a statement.

King was organizing a Poor People's Campaign, the next phase in the civil rights movement, before he was murdered in 1968.

"I came here on the one hand to honor (King's) birthday, but also for the things that he stood for," said Jim Glaser, a retired teacher from suburban Nyack, New York, at the march.

"We have to have a government that's responsive to people, ... a government that people can have some influence on," he said.

At New York's African Burial Grounds, schoolchildren played "We Shall Overcome" on violins before protesters marched to the Federal Reserve in downtown Manhattan.

"What Occupy Wall Street is trying to do is exactly what (King) was trying to -- focus on economic injustice and to inform and educate the American public," said Norman Siegel, former director of the New York Civil Liberties Union.

"I think (King) would be very pleased because Occupy Wall Street is the children of Dr King's dream," Siegel said at the 18th century burial ground, part of the National Park Service.

Protesters in the Occupy movement complain that billions of dollars in bailouts were given to banks while many Americans still suffer with joblessness and housing foreclosures. They say minorities were disproportionately affected by predatory lending practices.

The movement has influenced the national political conversation, with President Barack Obama echoing some of its themes in calling for a "fair shot" and "fair share" for all.

Community and civil rights leaders urged Americans to honor King's crusade for nonviolence and racial brotherhood by doing volunteer work.

The president, first lady Michelle Obama and their daughter Malia marked the day by helping spruce up the library at a school in a predominantly African-American community in northeast Washington.

"At a time when the country has been going through some difficult economic times, for us to be able to come together as a community, people from all different walks of life, and make sure that we're giving back, that's ultimately what makes us the strongest, most extraordinary country on earth," Obama said.

This year's King holiday came as officials in more than a dozen states implement new laws requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls. Critics say the restriction violates the Voting Rights Act of 1965 -- one of the key accomplishments of the movement King led.

Across the nation, formal events such as prayer services, performances and parades were staged for King's birthday, which became a federal holiday in 1986. Post offices, government buildings and most public schools were closed.

King, a Baptist pastor who advocated for nonviolence, racial brotherhood and equal rights and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, was assassinated in 1968 as he stood outside his motel room in Memphis, where he had gone to support striking sanitation workers.

The convicted assassin, a segregationist and drifter named James Earl Ray, confessed to the killing but later recanted. He died in prison in 1998.

Nurses' miscarriages linked to chemicals at work (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Nurses who worked with chemotherapy drugs or sterilizing chemicals were twice as likely to have a miscarriage as their colleagues who didn't handle these materials, in a new study.

Lead author Christina Lawson, a researcher at the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH), said she was not too surprised that exposure to certain chemicals would be tied to lost pregnancies.

"What surprised me the most was that (chemotherapy) drugs are something we've been trying to educate nurses on, about the hazards, and we're still finding exposures during the first trimester," Lawson told Reuters Health.

Because chemotherapy drugs typically target rapidly dividing cells, such as those in a tumor -- or a fetus, they have been a concern for pregnant women who come into contact with them, Lawson said.

Not all previous research has agreed on whether nurses' exposures at work are tied to more miscarriages, though.

To help resolve the issue, Lawson and her colleagues set out to do a larger study than the earlier ones.

They surveyed nearly 7,500 nurses who had had a pregnancy between 1993 and 2002.

The nurses were asked to remember how often they worked with certain chemicals or equipment, such as X-rays, anesthesia, anti-cancer drugs and disinfectants, during each trimester.

One out of every 10 nurses ended up losing her pregnancy before the half-way point, 20 weeks.

Lawson said that number seems similar to the rate of miscarriages in the general population.

However, among nurses who handled chemotherapy drugs for more than an hour a day, that rate was double - about two out of every 10 nurses lost her pregnancy.

NIOSH is the organization that provides safe-handling recommendations for workers who use chemicals.

Barbara Sattler, a nursing professor at the University of Maryland, said the results reflect a lack of adherence to those safety guidelines.

"I know most hospitals try to do the best they can, but if all these nurses are lining up with spontaneous abortions...it's a significant issue to be addressed," said Sattler, who was not involved in this study.

Nurses who gave patients X-rays had a slightly higher risk of miscarriage too, about thirty percent larger than nurses who didn't work with X-rays.

And nurses who handled sterilizing agents, such as ethylene oxide or formaldehyde, more than an hour a day also had a doubled risk of miscarriage, but only during the second trimester.

Lawson said that miscarriages during the second trimester might result from a toxin affecting the mother's ability to carry the baby, whereas a miscarriage in the first trimester suggests the toxin is affecting the fetus.

She added that it's difficult to determine the cause of the miscarriages seen in the study because the researchers don't know which chemicals each woman had contact with, and for how long.

Additionally, the current study only drew a link between the chemicals and the miscarriages, but did not prove that the materials caused the women to lose their pregnancies.

The surveys asked nurses to remember back sometimes as far as eight years, which leaves room for inaccuracies as well.

Lawson said her group is working on a follow-up study to get more precise information on exposures at work.

There are two million female nurses in the United States, making up four percent of the female workforce, the researchers write in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Nurses aren't the only ones exposed to chemotherapy drugs and sterilizing chemicals, they note. Pharmacists, drug manufacturers and veterinarians, to name a few, also handle these materials.

Sattler said it's important that nurses and their employers stick to safety guidelines, and that perhaps more strict enforcement of occupational regulations by the government might help protect workers.

Katy Perry's Colorist: Why She Dyed Her Hair Blue After Split (omg!)

Katy Perry's Colorist: Why She Dyed Her Hair Blue After Split

Feelin' blue and lookin' blue, too?

Katy Perry may be licking the wounds from her failed 14-month marriage to Russell Brand -- he pulled the trigger with a Dec. 30 divorce filing -- but that has nothing to do with her latest hair color, which she debuted Thursday in Santa Barbara, Calif. during a shoot for an Adidas ad.

PHOTOS: Katy's drastic hair evolution

"Katy wanted to go this particular color blue for a few weeks now," the newly single singer's colorist Rita Hazan told Us Weekly in an exclusive chat.

The blonde shade that Perry, 26, showed off in December (with Brand, 36, at her side!) "was not an interim shade," Hazan points out. "She knew it wouldn't be permanent -- just another Katy Perry look!"

PHOTOS: Katy's crazy cleavage

"It didn't take long to transition to this color as we have been working together previously," the celeb stylist adds. "We have a great relationship -- Katy is the ideal client because she loves to be creative and unpredictable with her look."

PHOTOS: Katy and Russell's bygone romance

"She was great, really nice. She seemed happy," Perry fan Eric Berlanger said of Perry's demeanor on the Adidas set Thursday.

Adds a pal close to the "Firework" singer: "She is all about moving on now."

Gingrich tempers Romney attacks in South Carolina (AP)

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? Under pressure from some in his own party, Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Thursday tempered his public attacks on front-runner Mitt Romney while defending his right to question the former Massachusetts governor's business record.

"If you ask about his career, it's because he's running for president," Gingrich said of the questions he and his allies have raised about Romney's tenure as head of a private equity fund.

"I think he owes the country a much more detailed answer about what his career was like, what decisions they made, because we're looking at the judgment, the values of a particular person," he said during a Fox News interview Thursday night.

Gingrich and other GOP presidential hopefuls have drawn the ire of an array of Republicans who believe the attacks on Romney's record at Bain Capital could hurt the party in the general election against President Barack Obama.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce entered the debate Thursday, saying it was "foolish" for Republicans to bash Romney for his work as a venture capitalist. A top South Carolina supporter of GOP contender Rick Perry, who had taken to calling Romney a "vulture capitalist," said he was joining Romney's camp out of irritation over Perry's attacks.

Gingrich called the criticism "absurd" and said his questions had been misconstrued as an attack on capitalism.

A pro-Gingrich political action committee also has railed against Romney's tenure at the helm of Bain Capital with the release this week of a 28-minute film assailing Romney for "reaping massive rewards" as head of the firm.

Gingrich is grasping for a campaign lifeline in South Carolina, which holds its primary Jan. 21, after a pair of disappointing fourth-place finishes in the contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.

During two campaign appearances in South Carolina's capital earlier Thursday, Gingrich stuck to a largely subdued campaign, focusing on his plans for saving Social Security, creating jobs and boosting domestic energy production.

He made no references to Romney, nor did he repeat his criticism of Romney's record as a venture capitalist. Instead, he tried to broaden his message with a call for auditing the federal bailout of the financial industry to see who got the money and why.

"When you have crony-capitalism and politicians taking care of their friends that's not free-enterprise. That's back-door socialism," Gingrich said during remarks to older voters at a senior citizen's expo.

The former House speaker predicted that a win in the first-in-the-South primary would pave a path to the presidency.

"If I win South Carolina, I think I will become the Republican nominee," he said.

Last month, Gingrich made a similarly bold declaration about winning the nomination. At the time he was ahead in the polls and Romney's allies had not yet blooded Gingrich with a barrage of negative attack ads in Iowa.

South Carolina has a decades-long streak of voting for the eventual GOP nominee.

From South Carolina, Gingrich was headed to Florida to raise money and open a campaign headquarters.

Travel Picks: World's top 10 film festivals (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? With the Sundance Film Festival starting next Thursday and the Oscars not too far off, the movie buffs at online travel adviser Cheapflights (http:///www.cheapflights.com) have compiled a top 10 list of their favorite film festivals across the globe. Reuters has not endorsed this list:

1. Sundance Film Festival - Park City, Utah, United States

Sundance Film Festival started out in 1978 as an event designed to attract more filmmakers to Utah while staying away from the overpowering Hollywood scene. Thirty-four years later, Sundance is the largest independent film festival in the United States, exhibiting feature-length films, documentaries, shorts, and animation while fostering dialogues among film enthusiasts. This year, the festival will run from Jan 19-29 in Park City, Utah, showcasing 200 films whittled down from nearly 9,000 submissions. Can't make it to the big event? On Jan 26, nine movie theaters across the United States will be hosting a filmmaker and his or her work as part of Sundance Film Festival USA, so you may be able to participate in the festivities wherever you are.

2. International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Though it receives less tourist traffic than its neighboring city, Amsterdam, Rotterdam is a modern representation of Dutch culture, and its annual film festival is constantly paving the way for all genres of innovative and thought-provoking cinema. This year's event will run from Jan 25 to Feb 5, and will encompass 19 screening venues - upwards of 350,000 viewers are expected to attend. Rotterdam attendees are passionate movie-goers, so program directors make a point of stripping down the superfluous aspects of film, like commercials and trailers, for an untarnished viewing experience.

3. Cannes International Film Festival - Cannes, France

The highly esteemed Cannes Film Festival sets the trend for up-and-coming cinema every year while boosting the film industry's caliber worldwide. As one of the most prominent film events recognized internationally, Cannes is the place for big names in cinema to show their latest work. Set along the pristine beaches of the French Riviera, warm temperatures and bright sunshine only add to the exciting atmosphere of the event. This year's star-studded festival will run from May 16-27. Attending the festival is by invitation only, but we suggest heading to the Tourist Office and getting passes to the Beach Cinema for free nightly screenings.

4. Guadalajara Film Festival - Guadalajara, Mexico

Considered the most significant film affair in Latin America, Guadalajara Film Festival is an important cultural event, showcasing Mexican and Latino talent alongside other international works of cinematic art. Thanks to Guadalajara Film Festival, Latin American film has become a competitor in the global film industry. From March 2-12, over 100,000 film lovers are expected to flood the streets and theaters of Guadalajara, viewing close to 200 films. While not as chaotic as Mexico City, Guadalajara is a destination perfect for exploring colonial history, enjoying the Mexican culture, shopping street markets and savoring traditional regional cuisine.

5. Rooftop Films - New York, New York, United States

New York City is known for filmmaking, and great festivals like The New York Film Festival and Tribeca are constantly at the forefront when it comes to showcasing the talent of filmmakers from around the world. But veer slightly off the beaten path to the skyline of the Big Apple, and check out our favorite New York festival known as Rooftop Films. What started out in 1997 as film screenings on the roof of a newly graduated film student's apartment has now expanded across Manhattan and Brooklyn. The festival runs on weekends from May to September.

6. Toronto International Film Festival - Toronto, Canada

The Toronto International Film Festival, which premiered in 1976 as an independent film festival, has grown to become one of the most important and influential festivals in North America, and is the leading public film festival in the world. Year after year, works from the Toronto festival have gone on to become Academy Award winners. This exciting and extensive festival takes place in the beginning of September (this year from Sept 6 to 16), and close to 350,000 attendees head to Canada's largest metropolis in the hopes of viewing what will be the next classic piece of cinematic art. Aside from putting Canada on the map as a competitor in the global film industry, Toronto's festival has become a launching pad for the success of new films released every fall.

7. Venice International Film Festival - Venice, Italy

The Venice Film Festival started in 1932, making it the oldest film festival in the world. Every year, this expansive event is held on the island of Lido in the fascinating city of Venice. Unlike similarly large film festivals such as Cannes, public attendees are able to purchase passes in advance to the screenings. This year's festival will run from Aug 29 until Sept 8 and screen more than 275 projects, 75 of which will be national and international premieres. And, if the film scene isn't enticing enough, Venice ranks high among travelers as a destination, encompassing history, culture and romantic charm.

8. Hong Kong International Film Festival - Hong Kong, China

The perfect blend of East Asian culture and a thriving global market, Hong Kong is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. It's no wonder that the Hong Kong International Film Festival has become one of the largest in the world, and has bridged the gap between Asian cinema and the global film industry. This year's event will take place from March 21 to April 5, showcasing more than 330 titles from 50 countries to an expected 600,000 viewers. Spread among more than 11 venues all around Hong Kong, including the Space Museum and City Hall, visitors get the chance to witness the latest works while exploring the vibrant city.

9. Berlin International Film Festival- Berlin, Germany

One of the most renowned film festivals in the world, the Berlin International Film Festival (also known as Berlinale) combines the glamour of filmmaking - parties, red carpet, high fashion - with the appreciation of cinematic art in a variety of genres. Divided into 10 separate sections, highlighting areas like experimental and avant-garde works, shorts geared towards younger generations, films focused around culinary themes and several others, there's a place for all film admirers at Berlinale. This year's festival will kick off on Feb 9 and last 10 days. It is expected that visitors from more than 115 countries will be in attendance to screen and discuss a variety of international films.

10. East End Film Festival - East London, United Kingdom As one of the largest film festivals in London, East End continues to grow in the industry as a high-profile event for filmmakers. In 2011, more than 60 feature films were screened, along with hundreds of shorts, all from more than 30 different countries. Submissions are based around several themes, the most popular being British, European and World films, horror and music. This coming July 3-8, coinciding with the Olympics, dozens of venues will open in East London to screen the latest works - many free - from both seasoned and up-and-coming film professionals. Plus, there will be plenty of live music, master classes and other special events to participate in.
